JOTAJOTA+ transforms Madrid apartment with a central wooden wall

Madrid-based studio JOTAJOTA+ has completed 'Casa para tres', an apartment renovation in the Chamartín district organized around a single custom-made wooden wall. The hybrid piece functions as a library, storage, and spatial articulator, replacing conventional partitions. Designed for a couple whose children have left home, the project reduces the number of bedrooms to expand common areas and create flexible, reading-oriented spaces. The central wooden element, made from DM board veneered in tinted natural oak with green and blue hues, alternates open and closed sections to provide rhythm and depth. It is self-supporting and offers acoustic insulation between the shelving and wardrobe sides. Custom solutions include ad-hoc wooden biscuit joints and pivot doors integrated into the shelves. The material continuity extends to the bedroom headboard and fixed furniture. A translucent glass block wall at the entrance filters natural light from the kitchen and laundry while maintaining privacy.
