Josh Sperling Launches Residency at The Surf Lodge in Montauk
Josh Sperling has launched a summer residency at The Surf Lodge in Montauk, in collaboration with Ned's Club. The artist from Ithaca has placed six of his existing artworks around the venue, featuring a hexagonal canvas that transitions from brown to green, inspired by the surrounding landscape, along with pieces that reflect twilight skies. His paintings, mounted on handcrafted plywood, simplify architectural forms into striking silhouettes. Recent creations reinterpret Abstract Expressionist techniques on swirl-shaped canvases, connecting to the legacy of Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner on Long Island. The residency kicked off with a performance by Canadian duo Bob Moses, followed by a private dinner for Ned's Club members, collectors, and artists. Sperling, visiting Montauk for the first time, was captivated by its waterfront charm. Earlier this month, he participated in a summer event at Philip Johnson's Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut, where one of his mirrors was featured in an Artsy benefit auction. He is also completing a line of wooden furniture with hexagonal designs. Two of the six artworks were sold during the opening dinner, and Sperling appreciates the residency for its potential to engage a younger audience beyond conventional galleries.
