Josef Albers Meditations at Villa Panza: 29 Works Explore Color Perception

exhibition · 2026-06-24

Twenty-nine works by Josef Albers are on view at Villa e Collezione Panza in Varese, Italy, in the exhibition Meditations, running through January 10, 2027. The show is curated by Aurelio Andrighetto and Anita Romanello, with Nicholas Fox Weber, executive director of the Josef & Anni Albers Foundation, serving as co-curator. The works are drawn from the Josef & Anni Albers Foundation, the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, and private collections. The exhibition includes pieces from the series Variants/Adobe (1946–1966) and Homage to the Square (1950–1976). Rather than a chronological retrospective, the project is conceived as a perceptual journey, encouraging visitors to slow down and engage deeply with color. Fox Weber invites viewers to pause: “Stop. Catch your breath. Breathe deeply and immerse yourself in color. Let it penetrate within you.” The presentation argues that Albers’s painted colors awaken a visual consciousness dulled by the bulimic consumption of images flooding chats and accumulating in photo galleries. Some works require prolonged observation until a color reveals itself fully. The exhibition opened on September 18, 2026, and continues until January 10, 2027.
