Jorge dos Anjos’s monumental sculptures dialogue with Lina Bo Bardi’s architecture at Sesc Pompeia

From March 17, 2026, Sesc Pompeia in São Paulo hosts 'Riscadura de Fogo', a comprehensive exhibition of Brazilian artist Jorge dos Anjos spanning over five decades of production. Curated by Lucas Menezes with research by Lorraine Mendes, the show features sculpture, painting, drawing, video, and new installations that engage directly with Lina Bo Bardi’s iconic architecture. Monumental works in iron, steel, soapstone, and wood occupy the venue’s Área de Convivência, some created on site, crossing the watercourse and transforming the space into an artistic journey. Fire is a central poetic agent, altering metal surfaces and evoking transformation. The exhibition foregrounds Afro-Brazilian memory and ancestry through subtle sculptural forms rather than literal representation. Dos Anjos studied at Fundação de Arte de Ouro Preto under Amilcar de Castro and has exhibited at Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro, Palácio das Artes, Musée Dapper, and Bienal de Valência. His works are in collections of Instituto Inhotim and Pinacoteca de São Paulo, and permanently installed at Lagoa da Pampulha and Aterro do Flamengo. An educational program led by Ronaldo Vitor da Silva offers mediated visits and workshops. Accessibility features by Karen Montija include Libras video, tactile map, and audio description. The exhibition runs until August 2, 2026, Tuesday to Saturday 10am–9pm, Sundays and holidays 10am–6pm, free entry.
