Jordan Casteel's Winter Sun Opens at Thaddaeus Ropac Paris Marais, Inspired by Hilma af Klint

exhibition · 2026-10-19

Jordan Casteel's exhibition, titled Winter Sun, has opened at Thaddaeus Ropac's gallery in the Marais district of Paris and will be available until 23 December. Casteel, celebrated for her large-scale portraits, found inspiration in Hilma af Klint's Nature Studies portfolio (1919–20) during her creative process. She emphasizes the significance of Convolvulus arvensis and Monotropa hypopitys, admiring af Klint's unique combination of botanical studies and mystical diagrams. Casteel draws parallels between this approach and her own technique of intertwining images with memories. Additionally, she reflects on her journey of motherhood, following the birth of her son in April 2023, linking it to af Klint's annotated works and the necessity of observing surroundings to understand the human experience. This interview is featured in AnOther Magazine's Autumn/Winter 2026 edition.
