Jony Ive's LoveFrom Studio Creates 6,000 Paper Dragonflies for Vogue World Milan Finale
More than 6,000 hand-folded paper objects descended from the dome of the Galleria in Milan during the grand finale of Vogue World Milan. The objects were designed by Jony Ive's LoveFrom creative studio, which named them the "LoveFrom libellula" after the Italian word for dragonfly. Each piece was folded by hand from a single sheet of paper without glue. Ive drew on dragonflies, sycamore seeds, Milanese lace, Venetian tile mosaics, and the scale of the Galleria itself. The team built multiple prototypes and used Codex, OpenAI's software engineering system, to simulate the Galleria and visualize the cloud of objects at varying sizes and densities. Release tests took place in an airplane hangar and at the Galleria to assess aerodynamics. Ive said the intent was to honor Milan as a city that both creates and makes, and to occupy the entire space, connecting ceiling to floor. He compared the release of thousands of objects to the thousands of tiles in a mosaic, and described movement as synonymous with natural intelligence, wanting the objects to appear to move rather than simply fall. The objects doubled as keepsakes meant to be collected from the floor and taken home, each printed with the time and place and the note "Designed with love in San Francisco." Leftovers are being recycled. Vogue World 2027 will take place in San Francisco.
