John Lautner's Sheats-Goldstein Residence: An LA Modernist Icon

The Sheats-Goldstein Residence, a striking creation by architect John Lautner, was completed in 1962 and is famous for its cave-like design with poured-in-place concrete, large glass walls, and a roof that extends outwards, all set against a sandstone hillside in Beverly Crest, Los Angeles. Originally built for the Sheats family, businessman James Goldstein acquired it in 1972 and donated it to LACMA in 2016. The residence has appeared in films like The Big Lebowski and features photography by Helmut Newton. Since 2015, the LA firm Conner + Perry, founded by former Lautner colleagues Kristopher Conner and James Perry, has overseen its restoration, including the Club James entertainment area beneath the infinity tennis court. Perry noted that great architecture evolves continuously.
