John Currin: The Provocateur of Contemporary Figuration

John Currin, born in Colorado in 1962, is a contemporary American painter known for provocative figurative works that blend classical techniques with kitsch and satire. He studied at Carnegie Mellon University (BFA, 1984) and Yale University (MFA, 1986), where he befriended artists Lisa Yuskavage and Sean Landers. His early influences include Willem de Kooning and Julian Schnabel. Currin's first major exhibition in 1989 featured portraits of high school girls from yearbook photos. By 1992, he was selling through Andrea Rosen Gallery. In 1994, he met artist Rachel Feinstein, who became his wife and muse. Currin's work often explores themes of vanity, beauty, and desire, using distorted proportions and unsettling details. Critics have accused him of misogyny, but he defends his art as satirical commentary on societal ideals. His style draws from Mannerist painters like Pontormo and Parmigianino, as seen in works such as 'Thanksgiving' (2003), which references Parmigianino's 'Madonna with the Long Neck'. Currin's paintings command high prices, with some selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars by 2003. His influence extends to artists like Cindy Sherman and Lisa Yuskavage.
