John Constable's Quest for Truth in Landscape Painting

John Constable (1776–1837), alongside J.M.W. Turner, is a leading figure of English Romantic painting, known for his focus on the countryside and rural life. Born in Suffolk, he initially was expected to manage his father's farm but pursued art with his father's permission. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools and was influenced by Dutch and Italian masters, yet he sought a direct truth from nature, criticizing the virtuosity of his era. His masterpiece "The Hay Wain" (1821, National Gallery, London) exemplifies his balanced composition of natural and human elements, with loose brushwork that immerses viewers in rural scenery. Another major work, "Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop's Grounds" (1823), exists in two versions: one at the Victoria and Albert Museum with a stormy sky, and another at the Metropolitan Museum of Art with a clear sky. The cathedral, a Gothic emblem, is surrounded by vegetation, with the bishop and his wife depicted at left. Constable's skies evoke the sublime, as theorized by Edmund Burke in his 1757 "Enquiry," and reflect Nikolaus Pevsner's notion of Puritan iconoclasm. Constable opposed academic painting, championing a free, natural art that mirrors reality while embracing the sublime.
