Joel Meyerowitz Reflects on Ground Zero Photos 25 Years After 9/11
At 88 years old, photographer Joel Meyerowitz revisits his renowned series on the September 11, 2001 attacks through the exhibition 'Joel Meyerowitz: Aftermath' at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, running until February 14, 2027. This display includes 28 photographs from his nine-month documentation at Ground Zero, where he defied a photography ban imposed by then-Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. The project, referred to as 'Aftermath' or 'Ground Zero,' has traveled to over 200 cities across 60 countries, including the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2002. Museum director Bonnie Clearwater remarked that the donation aligns with the 25th anniversary. Despite facing health challenges, Meyerowitz describes the experience as 'a calling' and 'profound.'
