Jody Ahrens: Colorado Landscapes in Oil

Jody Ahrens, a Colorado-based painter, creates landscapes inspired by the state's wilderness, working in oil with a limited palette of earth tones, ultramarine, and cadmium. She splits her time between plein air painting and studio work, using the former for quick studies of value and temperature and the latter for larger canvases with glazed color layers. Her subjects include the back side of fourteeners, aspen stands recovering from fire, and other fragile high-country scenes. Ahrens, who moved to Colorado and learned terrain through hiking with a sketchbook, aims to convey the feeling of places that make one stop talking.
