Joanna Hiffernan: Artist, Model, and Whistler's Muse

Joanna Hiffernan, born in Limerick, Ireland in 1843, moved to London in the late 1840s due to the Great Famine. Despite facing rejection from James McNeill Whistler's family and criticism from his friends, she became a key figure in Parisian artistic society, known for her wit and intelligence. Whistler praised her copper-red hair and pale skin, and she posed for his celebrated "Symphony in White, No. 1: The White Girl," which caused a sensation at the Salon des Refusées for its frank sexuality. In 1865, she and Whistler spent winter in Normandy with Gustave Courbet, who painted at least four versions of her portrait. Courbet later painted her again in "Le Sommeil" (1866), and she is hypothesized to be the model for his infamous "L'Origine du Monde," though evidence is lacking. Hiffernan also drew and painted but never publicly exhibited her work. Her relationship with Whistler lasted until the 1870s; she later moved to Nice and became an art dealer. They remained close until Whistler's death in 1903, and she attended his funeral. In 2022, the Royal Academy of Art in London held an exhibition titled "Whistler's Woman in White: Joanna Hiffernan."
