Joanna Blémont creates 2,000-frame watercolour film for Loewe's 180th anniversary

Joanna Blémont, an artist known for watercolour paintings that evoke quiet cinematic tension, has produced an animated sequence of over 2,000 watercolour frames for fashion house Loewe's 180-year anniversary campaign. Her practice involves painting in sequences, transforming watercolour or pencil marks into Risograph prints, comics, or publications. Her latest zine, 'Comatose,' explores the transition between wakefulness and sleep. Blémont draws inspiration from walks, photographs, and Google Maps, deliberately removing place-specific markers to create familiar yet uncanny scenes. She cites the 'unreality' of mixing spaces and forms, with architecture hinting at vague locations and figures appearing as silhouettes or shadows. Her work has been supported by Creative Scotland and the City of Edinburgh, and printed by earthbound press in Cambridge and Out of the Blueprint in Edinburgh. Blémont values the slow pace required for her mediums, believing it leads to better work.
