Joan Fontcuberta Leads Seminar on Photography's Revelation and Rebellion at CGAC

other · 2026-09-16

On 24 October 2026, the CGAC in Santiago de Compostela will host a seminar by Joan Fontcuberta titled 'La fotografía que se (revela) rebela'. The seminar, free with prior registration, runs from 10:00 to 14:00 and 16:00 to 20:00 in the CGAC boardroom. It draws on Fontcuberta's latest essay, 'Lliçons de coses: la fotografia que es (revela) rebel·la' (Arcàdia, Barcelona, 2025), and uses contemporary art examples and his own projects as case studies. Fontcuberta argues that photography, traditionally seen as a witness to reality, has become increasingly ambiguous, especially with AI accelerating a crisis of visual veracity. He suggests photography has 'come out of the closet,' revealing its true condition and rebelling against constraints. The shift from alchemy to algorithm means images are no longer just capturing the world but simulating, modeling, and inventing it. The seminar aims to move beyond uncritical fascination and apocalyptic rejection, understanding technology as the language of power in order to intervene. Registration is open from 7 to 25 September 2026 via email to cgac.prensa@xunta.gal, requiring full name, studies, work area or interest, email, phone, and a motivation letter. Selected participants will receive confirmation by email. The seminar is aimed at any adult interested in photography.
