Jihlava Municipal Arena: Czech Hedgehog-Inspired Sports Complex Opens

The Jihlava Municipal Arena has been inaugurated in the historic Czech town of Jihlava, crafted by the Brno architectural firm CHYBÍK + KRIŠTOF. This multifunctional sports facility, which took six years to complete with an investment of €80 million from public funds, showcases a distinctive red and grey triangular facade reminiscent of Gothic design, earning it the nickname 'The Hedgehog.' With a capacity for 5,650 spectators, the arena boasts a 230-metre running track, a food court, a 29-room hotel, and a gym. Inside, an oval arena features a ground floor that is open all around. Co-founder Ondřej Chybík emphasized the building's harmonious connection with its environment. The design transitioned from an original white lamella idea to its present inclusive vision for sports and community gatherings.
