Jean Shin's Tidal Crossing at Brooklyn Army Terminal Closes In Plain Sight Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-09-29

On September 19, Jean Shin's Tidal Crossing was unveiled at the Brooklyn Army Terminal (BAT) in Sunset Park, New York, marking the concluding piece of In Plain Sight, a yearlong showcase of 12 artists from Brooklyn. The installation features three sets of military-style nets suspended in a skybridge, adorned with camouflage banners that highlight flora from U.S. war zones. Each banner presents unique environmental themes and camouflage designs, such as Frogskin, Chocolate Chip, and Digital Camo, which have been in use since World War II. The vivid colors reflect themes of belonging, resonating with the immigrant communities in Sunset Park. Shin contemplated the notion of belonging, emphasizing that the unfamiliar can often feel familiar. A central panel displays photographs of oysters, mussels, and seaweed taken by Anna Lee for Hyperallergic.
