Japanese Manga Pioneer Yoshiharu Tsuge Dies at 88

Yoshiharu Tsuge, a foundational figure in Japanese gekiga manga, passed away on March 3, 2026, at age 88. Born in Tokyo in 1937, he began creating comics in the early 1950s and became known for his raw, realistic style focused on marginalized characters. Tsuge is recognized as a key developer of gekiga, an adult-oriented manga genre that emerged in 1960s Japan. His notable works include "Nejishiki" and "L'uomo senza talento" (The Man Without Talent). His career faced a significant crisis in the early 1960s due to economic hardship and personal struggles, but he recovered with support from fellow gekiga artists Yoshihiro Tatsumi and Sanpei Shirato. From 1965 onward, his most productive period involved collaboration with the influential alternative manga magazine Garo, where he developed a distinctive narrative style blending dream and reality. Tsuge stopped creating comics in 1987 due to psychological and family issues, but his work gained international recognition. In Italy, his reception grew significantly, with "L'uomo senza talento" winning the Gran Guinigi award in 2017 for best editorial initiative. Other works published in Italy include "Il giovane Yoshio" (2018), "Fiori rossi" (2018), and "Destino" (2019). His stories often feature anti-heroes such as prostitutes, weary laborers, and individuals struggling in post-war Japan, reflecting themes of nihilism and resignation. His influence extends to visual artists, with director Shinzo Katayama adapting his story "Desiderio sotto la pioggia" in 2024.
