Jana Kasalová's 'L'animale che dunque sono' at Centro Trevi, Bolzano

From October 2 to 23, 2026, the Centro Culturale Claudio Trevi in Bolzano hosts the solo exhibition "L'animale che dunque sono" by Czech artist Jana Kasalová. Curated by art historian Miroslava Hájek and part of the Bolzano Art Weeks, the show explores the fragile boundary between human and animal through photography and performance, challenging centuries of anthropocentrism. The title references Jacques Derrida's deconstruction of Cartesian dualism. Kasalová's research, ongoing since 2007, maps moments when human identity, constructed in opposition to nature, falters. The exhibition, produced by Spazio5 Contemporary Cluster for its 20th anniversary in collaboration with Studio Openspace, blends performance and photography, treating the human body as a liminal territory. Kasalová draws on her experience in cartographic landscape interpretation and footprint studies to explore flesh vulnerability and genetic memory. The curatorial narrative incorporates Rudolf Steiner's anthroposophy and a prayer by Saint Basil the Great, framing the show as a manifesto for ecological alliance and an ethics of care. The exhibition runs at Via dei Cappuccini 28, Bolzano, with opening hours Monday to Friday 9-18, Saturday 10-13 and 15-18, closed Sundays.
