Jamie Bush reimagines Pierre Koenig's 1966 house in Rancho Palos Verdes

Designer Jamie Bush transformed a 1966 Pierre Koenig house in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, for Washington, DC-based clients seeking a hideaway. The slow, layered process involved removing early 2000s clinical interventions and restoring midcentury materiality. Bush preserved Koenig's signature black posts, white walls, chevron roof, and open floor plan, while adding crafted layers like ipe wood paneling, walnut cabinetry, and terrazzo surfaces. The red brick fireplace was uncovered from black paint, and the front door got a reddish-persimmon hue. Landscape firm Terremoto enhanced indoor-outdoor flow with drought-tolerant plantings, a fire pit patio, and sandstone hardscape. Furnishings include pieces by Carlos Motta, Stan Bitters, Frank Ligtelijn, Finn Juhl, Piero Lissoni, Sergio Rodrigues, and George Nakashima. Artworks by Florence Arnold, Peter Voulkos, Mattea Perrotta, and Alexander Calder add subtle color. Bush collaborated with architect Barbara Bestor on previous projects like John Lautner's Silvertop. The project honors Koenig's original intent while adapting for contemporary living.
