Jamey Stillings' ATACAMA Exhibition Opens at Houston Museum of Natural Science
Documentary photographer Jamey Stillings has opened the exhibition 'ATACAMA: Renewable Energy and Mining in the High Desert of Chile' at the Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS), running through August 26, 2026. The exhibition features aerial photography exploring the intersection of renewable energy and mining in Chile's Atacama Desert, highlighting the country's role as the world's top copper producer and second-largest lithium producer. Stillings' work documents large-scale solar and wind projects, open-pit copper mines, and lithium evaporation ponds, emphasizing Chile's tripling of renewable energy capacity since 2017. The exhibition was realized through a $65,000 fundraising campaign via Fractured Atlas, with support from artist friends, family, and a $20,000 donation from a longtime client. Stillings collaborated with Blazing Editions for dye-sublimation metal prints and graphic designer Clay Williams for exhibition graphics. The show is installed on the 3rd floor of HMNS, near the King Tut exhibition. A limited-edition portfolio of twelve prints is available for $9,000 until December 31, 2026. The exhibition is part of Stillings' broader project 'Changing Perspectives: Renewable Energy & the Shifting Human Landscape,' which began in 2010. His work has been published in The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, and Der Spiegel, and is held in collections including the Library of Congress and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
