Jakob Collection's 'Anti Heroes' Exhibition at Villa Merkel

The exhibition titled 'Anti Heroes' at Villa Merkel in Esslingen am Neckar showcases a curated selection from the Jakob Collection, emphasizing artworks that prioritize themes of doubt, vulnerability, and failure over traditional heroic narratives. Curated by Lukas Jakob, this collection captures the struggles of a generation facing digital change and political instability. Featuring 27 artists, such as Miriam Cahn, Katharina Grosse, Roni Horn, and Raphaela Vogel, most pieces are drawn from the Jakob Collection, with additional loans. Organized into five thematic sections, it includes an archive and mediation area featuring an Anti-Heroes Library, inspired by Han Kang's 'The Vegetarian' and Ulrich Bröckling's thoughts on post-heroic heroism. Based near Freiburg im Breisgau, the collection consists of around 100 works by emerging artists from the tri-border area of Germany, France, and Switzerland, focusing on painting, installation, and media art since the 2000s. This exhibition represents the latest public display of the collection.
