Jai Chuhan's 'Claiming Space' at Lo Brutto Stahl, Paris
Jai Chuhan's first solo exhibition at Lo Brutto Stahl's Paris space, 'Claiming Space,' runs from May 9 to June 20, 2026. Curated by Omar Kholeif, the show spans works from 1990 to the present, tracing over three decades of the London-based painter's practice. Chuhan's process involves layering, erasure, and what she calls 'structuring mood,' building up and scraping back paint to create palimpsest-like canvases. Her subjects include self-portraits, memory scenes, and sitters, often depicting women caught in mutual gazes. A notable work, 'Conversation III' (2026), features a woman in a yellow dress. Kholeif writes that each Chuhan painting is 'entirely our own.' The exhibition was visited by Thom Oosterhoff.
