Jaffa Lam: Collaborative Artistry and Recycled Umbrellas in Hong Kong

In an interview with The Art Newspaper, Jaffa Lam, an artist based in Hong Kong, shares insights about her recent exhibitions and creative journey. A graduate of the Chinese University of Hong Kong with a BFA, MFA, and Postgraduate Diploma in Education, Lam remains active in her hometown. She frequently incorporates recycled umbrella materials into her art, creating tent-like forms from umbrella 'skins' and transforming their metal and plastic 'ribs' into frames that mimic lace window designs. Her notable exhibitions include 'Asteroid J-734' at Axel Vervoordt Gallery (2026), 'Threads of Kinship' at He Art Museum (2024), and her participation in the Shanghai Biennale (2025-26). During Art Week in March, she also exhibited in 'Stay Connected: Supplying the Globe' at Tai Kwun Contemporary. Lam highlights the significance of collaboration, particularly with the Hong Kong Women Workers' Association, which she has partnered with for 16 years, ensuring their contributions are recognized in museum captions. Her work intertwines art history with personal narratives, drawing inspiration from artists like Morandi and Brancusi, and she customizes her exhibition spaces by researching their histories and architectural designs. Currently, she is channeling her energy into her next project, inspired by her collaborators.
