Jack Solomon reconfigures Crown Heights apartment with interlocking millwork volumes

In Crown Heights, New York, architect Jack Solomon of Solomon Studio has reimagined a combined apartment, utilizing interlocking millwork volumes to convert a spacious layout into cozy, practical areas. This renovation caters to a couple anticipating a new arrival and incorporates wood, terrazzo, and vibrant colors throughout the home. A kitchen island acts as a social hub, featuring a removable butcher block for serving. A ceramic art series extends from a wall-mounted sideboard, providing a textured entryway. The living area is redesigned with interlocking volumes to showcase the owners' collections of books, records, and wine. The guest bathroom highlights a fluted blue ceramic backdrop framing the bathtub, while the primary bathroom enhances counter space with a double-vanity niche set in handmade concrete tiles and mint terrazzo. Collaborating with Brooklyn’s KLN Studio, Solomon Studio addressed spatial challenges with custom millwork. A vertical theme is echoed in the millwork screen, fluted tiles, and acoustic slatwall, while an oak wardrobe envelops a volume in the bedroom. This project achieves a balance between functionality and spatial harmony, resulting in a warm, practical home tailored to daily living.
