Ivana Kobilca: Slovenia's Pioneering Painter and Her European Journey
Ivana Kobilca, who was born in Ljubljana in 1861, is recognized as Slovenia's foremost painter. At the age of 16, she began her journey in painting and later studied under Alois Erdtelt in Vienna and Munich. Her income primarily came from her portraits of family and officials. In 1888, she showcased her work for the first time in Vienna, followed by a solo exhibition in Ljubljana the next year, where a portrait of her sister faced censorship. In 1891, she relocated to Paris, where she gained recognition at the Salon and was influenced by contemporary French art. In 1897, she made history as the first Slovenian woman to participate in the Venice Biennale. After spending seven years in Sarajevo, she returned to Ljubljana and then moved to Berlin until the onset of World War I. Kobilca passed away in 1926, and her works are housed in the National Gallery of Slovenia.
