Italian court sentences ex-highway chief to 12 years for Genoa bridge collapse

Giovanni Castellucci, former CEO of Autostrade per l'Italia, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for vehicle homicide and negligence over the 2018 collapse of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa, which killed 43 people. The bridge, a key highway link between France and Italy, gave way during torrential rain on August 14, 2018. The verdict came after four years of trial hearings involving 57 defendants charged with manslaughter, endangering transport safety, and falsifying documents. Prosecutors had sought a total of over 400 years in prison, including 18 years for Castellucci. Relatives of the victims packed the courtroom for the verdict.
