Islyn Studio designs Uchi DC with neo-noir and New Formalist influences

New York-based Islyn Studio has completed the interiors for Uchi DC, a Japanese restaurant in Washington DC's Dupont Circle neighborhood. Led by designer Ashley Wilkins, the design blends local architectural references—particularly the New Formalist style of Edward Durell Stone's nearby National Geographic Society headquarters—with Japanese craftsmanship and cinematic atmospheres inspired by Wong Kar-wai films and late-night Tokyo. The restaurant is the second Uchi location by Islyn Studio for chef Tyson Cole's Hai Hospitality, following Uchiko in Miami Beach. The space is divided into several rooms, each with its own identity, featuring two-tone wood paneling, straight-stack clay tiles, dark stone flooring, marbled green stone bars, circular paper lanterns, and wooden lattice screens. Color palettes include deep greens, caramel hues, and coral tones. The design aims to evoke a 'neo-noir urbanism' and a dreamlike, transportive atmosphere. Other Uchi and Uchiko locations in Miami, Houston, and West Hollywood were designed by Michael Hsu and ORA. Islyn Studio's portfolio also includes a Brooklyn veterinary clinic, an Albuquerque food hall, and the Now Now Hotel and Brass restaurant in Manhattan, both shortlisted for Dezeen Awards.
