Isern Serra's Focacha speakeasy channels Space Age interiors in Barcelona

architecture-design · 2026-06-28

Spanish designer Isern Serra has completed Focacha, a speakeasy cocktail bar in Barcelona's Tuset Street, for hospitality group Grupo La Confitería. The bar is hidden behind a traditional focacceria that has sold Italian bread for 50 years; guests enter through a refrigerator. The interior features multi-coloured modular furniture inspired by Verner Panton's 1960s Visiona installations, with seven organically shaped modules ranging from yellow to red creating intimate niches. A stainless-steel bar with rounded edges reflects the vibrant colors. The fully carpeted ceiling and walls extend behind the bar. A circular opening leads to a DJ room lined with curved banquettes, merging 1960s nostalgia with a dystopian future aesthetic. Mirrored walls create spatial illusions, while Panton-designed Flowerpot VP2 and Panthella lamps complete the atmosphere. Serra noted the complex curves required sculptural construction using mock-ups and full-scale prototypes. The bar evokes the 'gauche divine' era of the 1960s-70s when Tuset Street was a hub for liberal professionals. Serra's studio is in Barcelona's Poblenou neighborhood.
