Isabel Merchante's 'Programming a Love Letter' Debuts at Purist Gallery, London
Purist Gallery presents Isabel Merchante's inaugural solo exhibition, titled 'Programming a Love Letter,' featuring three projects developed over the last three years: 'Drawings of the Latent Crust' (2023), 'Constellation Creatures' (2026), and 'PCBS (Poetic Cartography of Branching Significances)' (2026). Merchante delves into the intersection of art and computation, crafting systems that yield surprising results. 'Constellation Creatures' investigates non-human forms of communication through light and rhythm, incorporating LEDs and machine learning. 'PCBS' visualizes a neural network's latent space via printed circuit boards. The 'Drawings of the Latent Crust' includes 30-meter installations featuring photoluminescent stones in desert landscapes. Born in Madrid in 1999, Merchante resides in London and Madrid and holds an MA from the Royal College of Art and an MFA in Computational Arts from Goldsmiths.
Key facts
- 'Programming a Love Letter' is Isabel Merchante's first solo exhibition with Purist Gallery, London.
- The exhibition brings together three projects developed over the past three years: 'Drawings of the Latent Crust' (2023), 'Constellation Creatures' (2026), and 'PCBS (Poetic Cartography of Branching Significances)' (2026).
- The central piece, 'Constellation Creatures,' explores non-human communication through octopus-inspired creatures with integrated LEDs and machine-learning-generated visual patterns.
- 'PCBS' is presented for the first time in this exhibition and materialises the latent space of a neural network using printed circuit boards.
- 'Drawings of the Latent Crust' consists of large-scale ephemeral installations up to 30 metres long, made of photoluminescent stones in remote desert locations.
- Isabel Merchante was born in Madrid in 1999 and is based between London and Madrid.
- Merchante holds an MA in Contemporary Art Practice from the Royal College of Art and is completing an MFA in Computational Arts at Goldsmiths, University of London.
