ISA Converts 1922 Blumenthal Chocolate Factory in Philadelphia into Community Hub

architecture-design · 2026-10-20

This fall, ISA completed the Chocolate Factory Community Hub, a 66,600-square-foot redevelopment of the Blumenthal Brothers chocolate factory from 1922, located in Bridesburg, Philadelphia. The nonprofit Concilio occupies 46,000 square feet for family services, while other occupants include the Madden School, Gateway Community Action Partnership, and BAYADA Home Health Care. Designed by Ballinger Company, the renovation, which cost $1.3 million and utilized federal Historic Tax Credits, features restored window bays, masonry enhancements, and original signage. Inside, the space boasts large windows, creating open work areas and private offices with partial-height partitions. The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia recognized the project with a 2026 Grand Jury award. Additionally, ISA is converting a 19th-century Frank Furness building into affordable housing for artists.
