Iowa Artist Creates Monumental Matchstick Sculptures Displayed in Dedicated Museum

Patrick Acton, an artist from Iowa, has been constructing large-scale sculptures from wooden matchsticks since 1977, using nearly 10 million individual pieces. His works include detailed replicas of architectural landmarks, spacecraft, and pop culture icons, with creations like the USS Iowa battleship, the United States Capitol, and the Millennium Falcon. Many of his over 75 models are displayed at the Matchstick Marvels Museum in Gladbrook, Iowa, while others appear in Ripley's Believe It or Not! museums globally. Acton developed a unique technique of bending matchsticks without steam to achieve complex shapes.
