Invader: 4,400+ Mosaics Turn World Into a Playable Art Game

Invader, the anonymous French street artist, has installed over 4,400 ceramic mosaics across 87 territories since the late 1990s. His pixelated figures, inspired by the 1978 arcade game Space Invaders, appear on city walls, rooftops, monuments, underwater sites, the stratosphere, and the International Space Station. Using ceramic tiles as physical pixels, he translates 8-bit digital imagery into tactile, architectural public art. The artist's anonymity allows the project to transcend biography, with each mosaic functioning as a coded coordinate in a global composition. The Flash Invaders app enables users to find, scan, and score mosaics, turning public art into a reality game. Paris remains the epicenter with 1,500 mosaics installed between 1998 and 2024. Other major cities include London, Berlin, Rome, Amsterdam, Vienna, Barcelona, Manchester, Brussels, Rotterdam, New York, Los Angeles, Miami, San Diego, Cancun, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Bangkok, Seoul, Melbourne, and Perth. The project anticipates GPS culture, digital collecting, and social sharing, transforming urban spaces into a networked, participatory artwork. Mosaics are subject to theft, damage, and restoration, adding tension between permanence and disappearance.
