Indigenous Arts Pioneer Rhoda Roberts AO Remembered for Cultural Leadership

Rhoda Roberts AO, a prominent Widjabul Wiyebal woman from the Bundjalung Nation and influential figure in Australian Indigenous arts, has died at age 66. Her passing was confirmed by family on March 21, following a seven-month battle with a rare ovarian cancer. Roberts was recognized for her extensive contributions to cultural representation, including introducing the 'Welcome to Country' practice to national prominence. She held numerous pioneering roles, becoming the first Indigenous presenter on Australian prime-time television with SBS's Vox Populi in 1990. Roberts co-founded the Aboriginal National Theatre Trust in 1987 and established Sydney's Dreaming Festival in 1998, later integrated into Woodford Folk Festival. She co-created the First Peoples segment of the Sydney 2000 Olympics opening ceremony with Stephen Page AO. Her career spanned nursing, journalism, acting, festival direction, and institutional leadership, including as inaugural Head of Indigenous Programming at Sydney Opera House and Creative Director of Parrtjima Festival in Alice Springs. In 2016, she received an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to performing arts and Indigenous culture advocacy.
