In Memoriam: Lucia Laguna, Nelson Garrido, and Carlos Alonso Remembered

In its In Memoriam section, Hyperallergic pays tribute to three Latin American artists who have recently passed away. Lucia Laguna, a Brazilian painter (1941–2026), found her muse in Rio de Janeiro's North Zone, showcasing her work at the 2012 São Paulo Biennial and in various locations across the U.S., South America, and Europe. Gallerist Sadie Coles remarked on how her pieces evoke lush portals reminiscent of Rio. Venezuelan photographer Nelson Garrido (1952–2026) produced unfiltered art that examined themes of power and violence, earning Venezuela's National Prize for Visual Art in 1991 and the International Association of Art Critics Master of Arts Award in 2021. Argentine artist Carlos Alonso (1929–2026) illustrated Argentina's cultural and political narratives, receiving the Platinum Konex Award twice and exhibiting extensively throughout Latin America and Europe. This column appears every Wednesday.
