Illustrator Thomke Meyer on Motion, Music, and Her Upcoming Graphic Novel

In a recent interview, illustrator Thomke Meyer, celebrated for her vibrant editorial covers for publications like Die Zeit, Elle, and Der Spiegel, shared insights into her artistic inspirations and creative methods. Her illustrations, infused with a sense of movement, draw influence from music, film, and the natural world. Growing up in a village in East Frisia, she began her artistic journey at an early age, attending art school at just 10. After being turned away by fine art programs in Berlin, she pivoted to illustration, studying at HAW Hamburg from 2013 to 2021, where she earned a master’s degree. Working from her Hamburg home studio, she emphasizes personal reflection before addressing client needs to avoid clichés. Despite her perfectionism hindering personal projects, she completed a notable piece for Die Zeit Schweiz on child abuse, depicting a haunting playground scene inspired by 1970s toys. Additionally, she enjoyed creating an animated bird for The Different Folk, relishing the freedom it provided. Currently, Meyer is focused on finishing a graphic novel by next year and plans to travel to the Adriatic for snorkeling and drawing stones.
