Iliana Ortega's Magical Abstraction: Water, Memory, and the American Landscape

Iliana Ortega (b. 1981, Mexico City) is a Mexican artist based in Sagaponack, New York, whose work bridges structural abstraction and sensory perception. She earned a BFA from the University of Guanajuato and became the first Mexican artist in the MFA painting program at Yale School of Art. Her practice centers on water, exploring movement, light, and natural forces through drawings, photographs, and watercolors. Between 2020 and 2025, she created over one hundred iridescent watercolors in Hawaii and New York, often on cotton paper. Her series includes works like 'Big Sur Ocean Cliff' (2017), 'Light Waves' (2023), 'Carl Andre' (2022), and 'Moloka‘i' (2022). The watercolors evoke marine flora and oceanic currents without direct representation. 'Carl Andre' references the sculptor and the controversy surrounding the death of Ana Mendieta. Ortega's work is influenced by the East Hampton region's modernist legacy, including figures like Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Adolph Gottlieb, and Arthur Dove. Her method integrates primal human instincts into abstract forms that maintain visual unity. She lives in Sagaponack, a quiet agricultural village on Long Island's south fork, where the natural environment and proximity to sites of American modernism shape her practice.
