IKEA's Tiny Houses: Compact Living Meets Personal Identity

IKEA has unveiled handcrafted miniature dwellings in Melbourne, Chengdu, and Beijing, designed in collaboration with artist Christopher Robin Nordström. These 1:12 scale models illustrate how compact living spaces can maintain their charm, highlighting the necessity for homes to fulfill various roles. The initiative, known as the 'Tiny Houses' project, stems from IKEA's Store and Organise Report 2026, which gathered insights from over 30,000 participants. The findings reveal a trend towards 'meaningful mess,' with 59% of respondents favoring homes with personality. Licca Li from Ingka Group emphasized that individuals desire residences that narrate their stories. Notable insights include 82% retaining sentimental items and 10% using ovens for storage. The IKEA open house experience is available from late August to September, showcasing modular storage options.
