IGArchitects' Overlapping Spaces House in Okinawa Blurs Interior and Exterior

IGArchitects has finalized Overlapping Spaces, a residential structure in Okinawa, Japan, that innovatively transforms traditional architecture with its blend of reinforced-concrete walls, columns, and an expansive roof. This design eliminates typical room separations, instead fostering a seamless spatial experience through the interlacing of structural elements. The walls and columns create varying levels of enclosure, while the roof protects the areas below. The outcome is a collection of zones that blur the lines between indoors and outdoors, facilitating light, air, and movement. Walls and columns are viewed as more than just supports; they contribute to rhythm and scale. The roof offers a spacious, sheltered area for everyday activities. By simplifying the architecture to key elements, IGArchitects enhances spatial complexity. The overlapping spaces encourage versatility in use, allowing for diverse lifestyles. This project examines how a robust structural framework can harmonize with openness, yielding architecture that is both defined and flexible.
