ICA Miami to mount first major Carroll Dunham survey in 25 years

On December 1, 2026, during Miami Art Week, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA Miami) will unveil the first significant museum exhibition of Carroll Dunham's paintings in over 25 years. Curated by Alex Gartenfeld and Gean Moreno, this showcase includes more than 50 artworks created over four decades, ranging from early abstract pieces from the 1980s to his latest studio creations. Dunham's artistic style oscillates between abstraction and figuration, influenced by post-war American art, underground comics, landscape, sexuality, and pop culture. The exhibition highlights his artistic journey through various phases, including early wooden panel abstractions, the 'shooter' character of the 1990s, serene bather scenes, and the dynamic 'Wrestlers' series. Accompanying the exhibition will be a fully illustrated catalogue featuring essays by Megan Kincaid, John C. Welchman, and Gean Moreno, along with an interview with Alex Gartenfeld. This survey is set to be a prominent museum event during Miami Art Week.
