Hung Hsien Retrospective at Asia Society Hong Kong

A retrospective at Asia Society Hong Kong, 'Hung Hsien: Between Worlds' (25 March – 21 June), showcases the Taiwanese ink painter's career from the 1950s to the 1970s. Hung Hsien (born 1933 in Yangzhou, China) moved to Taiwan in 1948 and studied under Qing prince Puru and at National Taiwan Normal University. After relocating to the US in 1958, she merged classical ink with Abstract Expressionism. She became a rare female member of the Fifth Moon Group, founded by Liu Kuo-sung. The exhibition features early works like 'Sea of Clouds' (1955) and mature pieces such as 'Pond of Heaven' (1971), 'Emerald Island' (1971), and the five-scroll 'Heaven and Earth' (1971). Hung's work has been obscured by her multiple names—Hung Hsien, Margaret Chang, and Hong Xian—and by biases against women, Taiwanese, and ink artists.
