Humor and Postmodernism in 'A Postmodernist Says ¿Qué?' at Centro de Artes, San Antonio

The exhibition 'A Postmodernist Says ¿Qué?' at Centro de Artes in San Antonio's Historic Market Square features 34 artists exploring humor within the Latino experience. Curated by Vikky Jones, who earned her MFA from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2012, the show spans two floors and includes photography, collage, ceramics, video, installation, and assemblage. Works by María J. Brown, Adrian de la Cruz, Raul Rene Gonzalez, and Richard Armendariz address domestic life, political tension, food, mental health, lucha libre culture, history, nature, medicine, religion, and Tejano sensibilities. Brown's 'What Fruit Bowl' humorously depicts a pickle among peaches, referencing South Texas snacks. De la Cruz's 'Heal All, Save All' elevates Vicks VapoRub to a sacred icon in a stained-glass style. Gonzalez's 'Photo Lessons, Balance Werk, & Feet Painting (Collab with June)' captures fatherhood and collaboration with his daughter. Armendariz's 'Ya Me Voy A Therapy' uses a lowrider to critique machismo. Jones noted that the show evolved from a single-floor humor exhibition into a complex exploration, stating, 'Humor allows us to overcome discomfort.' The exhibition runs through August 30, 2026.
