Hugh Hayden's 40-Degree Tilted Chapel at Venice Biennale

American artist Hugh Hayden has unveiled 'Huff and Puff Chapel,' a brick chapel leaning 40 degrees forward, at the 61st Venice Biennale. Commissioned by collectors Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo and Agostino Re Rebaudengo for their island San Giacomo in Paludo, the installation creates an illusion of imminent collapse. The chapel is part of a permanent collection managed by Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo (FSRR). The structure features custom bricks, a green metal roof, a 10-meter steeple with a locally cast bell inscribed 'Not by the hair on my chinny chin chin,' and an interior with tilted pews and a crucifix reimagined with an ambiguous rib cage. Hayden, trained as an architect, designed the work to evoke disorientation and reflection, referencing 'The Three Little Pigs' as a metaphor for resistance. The island, purchased in 2018, is being developed as a self-sustaining hub for contemporary art, located 20 minutes by boat from Venice's historic center.
