Høyer Arkitektur and Maria-Therese Grant design timber house with central atrium in Denmark

Situated on the outskirts of Ebeltoft, Denmark, House on a Hill was crafted by Høyer Arkitektur in partnership with Maria-Therese Grant, nestled within a moraine landscape shaped by glacial movements from the last Ice Age. This residence is perched on a raised plateau and topped with an expansive roof. At its heart lies a central atrium that serves as both a social and spatial hub, seamlessly connecting various interior areas while offering views in all four cardinal directions. The interior is defined by a timber framework consisting of twelve rooms, each measuring 3.6 by 3.6 meters, organized in a column-and-beam layout beneath a continuous roof. This design eliminates traditional hallways, fostering direct connections. Emphasizing adaptability, the roof is supported by external walls and perimeter beams, enabling the removal or reconfiguration of internal partitions over time. Extending beyond the enclosed area, the roof creates a perimeter terrace, upheld by a timber column colonnade, bridging the house and its surroundings. This project exemplifies Høyer Arkitektur's commitment to site-specific design, materiality, and construction as fundamental aspects of architectural philosophy.
