House DM: Historic Belgian Farm Transformed into Parisian Nightclub-Inspired Residence

In Damme, Belgium, the House DM project by Van Damme – Vandeputte Architects reimagines a historic farmhouse with a theatrical interior evoking 1920s Paris nightclubs. Rather than nostalgic restoration, the intervention creates a radical reinterpretation where the home becomes an immersive stage. Dark materials, subdued lighting, and textured compositions generate an intimate, cinematic atmosphere. The architecture choreographs experience through contrasts between light and shadow, openness and enclosure. This approach breaks from traditional bright, open country houses in favor of sensory, enveloping narratives. The project preserves rural essence while offering contemporary spatial experiences, transforming domestic space into emotional territory. House DM reflects a broader architectural shift from functional spaces to immersive environments where living involves perceiving changing atmospheres. The design questions how far a home can become a theatrical space, blurring boundaries between domestic, social, and experiential realms.
