Honduras: Presidential Popularity Plummets as Ex-Leader's Networks Resurface

A recent opinion poll by the Jesuit research center Eric-SJ reveals that Honduran President Nasry Asfura's approval rating has collapsed to just 3.8 percent, a historic low according to analyst Joaquín Mejía. Asfura, aged 67, was inaugurated in January with support from Donald Trump during his campaign. The decline in popularity is attributed to the return of former President Juan Orlando Hernández from the USA, who aims to regain power. Hernández, who led the country from 2014 to 2022, is associated with networks of economic clans that dominated during his tenure. As a former mayor of Tegucigalpa, Asfura is closely linked to these networks, which are now reasserting themselves, but not in his favor. The poll indicates a significant loss of public trust, unprecedented in the country's recent history. The political landscape in Honduras appears to be shifting as these authoritarian structures resurface, posing challenges to Asfura's presidency.
