Historic Prints Gain Favor as New Collectors Transform Market Dynamics

The prints and multiples market is undergoing significant transformation driven by new collectors and shifting preferences toward historical works. Artnet Auctions is currently hosting its Premier Prints and Multiples sale, featuring pieces from prominent artists including Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Banksy, Jeff Koons, and Damien Hirst. The auction runs through April 9, 2026, coinciding with the IFPDA Print Fair in New York from April 9-12. According to Artnet data, 50% of prints and multiples lots sold between 2020 and 2025 went to first-time buyers on their platform, indicating a substantial change in collector demographics. Conor Williams, head of prints and multiples at Artnet Auctions, notes that while contemporary print demand has softened, historical material remains robust. Modern prints achieved $72.8 million at auction in 2024, surpassing contemporary prints at $55.6 million. Specific works in the sale include Roy Lichtenstein's 'Two Paintings' from 1984, Ellsworth Kelly's 'Blue/Red-Orange/Green' (1970-1971) with an estimate of $8,000-$12,000, and Warhol's 'Cows' series pieces estimated between $18,000 and $30,000. David Hockney's market strength was demonstrated by a record-setting £762,000 sale in October 2024. Despite rising entry-level prices that challenge new collectors, accessible options remain, such as works by Louise Bourgeois and Frank Stella available for under $10,000. The IFPDA Print Fair attracted 21,000 visitors last year, a 14% increase, with VIP registrations up 57%. Williams emphasizes the importance of discernment and personal value in collecting decisions.
