Hiromi Uehara on Color, Intuition, and Her Miu Miu Jazz Club Performance
Japanese pianist and composer Hiromi Uehara, born in Hamamatsu in 1979, learned to read music through color under her childhood tutor Noriko Hikida, who colored sheet music to convey emotion. This synesthetic approach still shapes her work: she asks lighting directors to recreate colors she sees in pieces, and for her 2019 album Spectrum, she envisioned light blue and yellow. Hiromi performed at Miu Miu Jazz Club in Tokyo on May 2026 at Dance Hall Shinseiki. She studied at Berklee College of Music under Ahmad Jamal, released her debut album Another Mind in 2003, won a Grammy in 2011 with The Stanley Clarke Band for Best Contemporary Jazz Album, and performed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games opening ceremony.
