Herzog & de Meuron and Sasaki Design Amherst College Student Center and Dining Commons for 2026

Amherst College has commissioned Herzog & de Meuron and Sasaki Associates to design a new Student Center and Dining Commons, scheduled for completion in 2026. The project, photographed by Iwan Baan, is located in Amherst, Massachusetts, United States, at the intersection of the historic elevated quad and a new lower greenway. The building is intended to become the heart of the campus, offering a place for students to rest between classes and a gathering point for social interaction. All spaces within the structure are linked by a crossroads—a vertical and horizontal network of shared areas that connects the upper quad with the lower greenway, the student center with the dining commons, and the old with the new. The design aims to enhance student experience by fostering community and maximizing opportunities for wellbeing. Herzog & de Meuron serves as the design architect, while Sasaki Associates Inc. is the executive architect. The project falls under the category of university architecture and is curated by Nina Vuga. Amherst College is noted for its long-standing commitment to academic excellence and holistic student development.
