Henry Wood's Wooden Figures Depict Doomed Future Mars Colonists

Artist Henry Wood has created a series of wooden sculptures imagining a failed human colony on Mars. The project, titled 'We went to Mars and it was a disaster,' features elongated figures with individual tragic histories carved into their forms. Wood began developing the concept approximately ten years ago after visiting a Cairo museum and observing how conservators reassemble broken artifacts. Each figure requires several weeks to complete, with Wood sourcing materials during travels to locations like the Pacific Northwest and Oaxaca. The artist explores how clothing reveals personal beliefs and incorporates contrasting woodworking techniques.
