Hennessey Architecture Renovates Mill Valley Suburban House for Young Family

architecture-design · 2026-10-20

Hennessey Architecture completed a moderate-scale renovation of a classic suburban house in Mill Valley, California, in 2023, reconfiguring the 1,870-square-foot home for a couple with two young children. The design team framed the project around the idea of the house as both a refuge and a bridge — linking past to present, one landscape condition to another, and a family's aspirations to what was achievable within the budget. Michael Hennessey served as principal architect, with Claudia Merzario on the design team. Structural engineering was handled by Bill Lynch of Berkley Structural Design, New Dimension Builders acted as general contractor, and George Loew provided landscape architecture. Adam Rouse photographed the finished residence, which ArchDaily classified under Houses and Renovation. The project description was submitted by the architecture team and curated for ArchDaily's Spanish-language edition by Susanna Moreira. The renovation was planned so the house meets the current needs of a young family while remaining adaptable as the children grow.
